SmartGurlz

"There is no limit to what we, as women, can accomplish"

- Michelle Obama

Stanford 10/13/18

This was the debut of the new  SmartGurlz program, and all the girls learned a lot about programming and enjoyed it as well. This session was successful but meanwhile we learned a lot about what could be improved for future classes.

Stanford 11/3/18

In this workshop, we taught 6 curious girls about coding using blocks and had them code their SmartGurlz siggys to drive and complete missions by coding. They were all very intelligent and got through the whole curriculum. Two Stanford students observed our learning environment for a project they had to do and interviewed us about our team history and plans for the future.

Stanford 11/10/18

Thirteen girls showed up to this workshop looking for a challenge in the STEM field. While many were ahead of the game, some struggled. We gave those struggling extra attention and had those ahead be more independent and take on challenges.

Oakland 12/22/18

Instead of hosting another SmartGurlz class in Palo Alto, we decided to expand our influence to areas that have a more limited access to resources. We hosted a SmartGurlz class in Oakland in the Golden Gate Branch of the Oakland library. There, we taught 12 girls the basis of coding using SmartGurlz products.

Stanford 9/14/19

New season, new classes! We started off the year with a class at Stanford for 11 eager girls. Through the duration of the course, we led the girls through our own SmartGurlz curriculum, which many of them were able to get through and learn a lot along the way. At the end of the workshop, the girls used their new skills in a coding competition. The girl with the best-programmed dance was given a Siggy provided by SmartGurlz!

San Jose 10/19/19

We partnered with the all-girls Castilleja School to advertise our classes. 13 people came to the class, eager to learn about coding. After teaching the kids about the basics of the programming software such as how to move forward and backward and set the speed,  we allowed them to complete the our challenges at their own pace.

Sunnyvale 11/16/19

We hosted a class in Sunnyvale, where a total of 33 people showed up. This was by far our most successful class, as everyone had a great time working with the siggys and coding them to do whatever they want, through our curriculum. We had to adapt because of the unexpected number of people, but overall this class was a blast!
